Welcome to ARMA Houston!

We welcome you to our meetings and always look forward to having new members join our association. New members provide an infusion of individual perspectives and energize the organization. The participation of members throughout the greater Houston area is what makes ARMA Houston a vital Chapter.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What is ARMA?  As the Houston Chapter of ARMA International, we are a not-for-profit professional association. We offer educational and networking opportunities regarding managing Records and information in all forms and formats (both paper and electronic). This dynamic field of information governance is important to the companies that we work for and the community at large.

When was ARMA International established?  In 1955.

When was ARMA Houston established?  What is now ARMA Houston, was originally organized as the Records Management Association of Houston in 1959. It became Chapter 16 of ARMA International in 1962.

How large is the organization?  Our Houston Chapter has over 400 members. There are approximately 11,000 members worldwide

What type of jobs do our members hold?  Members work in diverse industries and hold a variety of positions such as Records Managers, legal professionals, IT professionals, consultants, and imaging specialists.

What industries are represented?  All industries fall under the ARMA umbrella. There are many issues common to all industries, so our networking and educational opportunities are beneficial regardless of industry. In addition, due to Houston's workforce, there are many members in the Energy, Legal and Medical industries. These groups meet separately to discuss issues unique to their industry. We encourage members in all industries to collaborate regarding Records and Information issues unique to their respective industries.

What forms the basis of your educational programs?  We have a multi-pronged approach. Not only do we benefit from the experience of experts within our profession and alliances with other professions, we also benefit from ARMA's numerous publications and standards development. For example, ARMA made significant contributions to the International Records Standard ISO-15489.

How else can ARMA help me in my job?

  • Staying abreast of compliance issues
  • Assisting in reducing operating costs by utilizing Records & Information Management (RIM) concepts
  • Becoming aware of automation, Best Practices and lessons learned
  • More familiarity with risks (disasters, theft, etc.)
  • Awareness of vendor products and services
  • Numerous networking opportunities are always available

Is there a minimum experience level required?  No. We're excited to have student participation in our meetings and conferences.  We welcome everyone regardless of their level of experience.

Are you involved in the Houston Community?  Yes. Over the years, we've participated in numerous community service projects including helping local schools and partnering with associations that assist people with various needs. We also lend our skills to projects such as assisting in the preservation of the Harris County Archives
